Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs
What is the Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic?
The Robert R. Frank Student Run Free-Clinic is a free healthcare clinic that provides quality healthcare at no cost to those without insurance. We are affiliated with the Wayne State University School of Medicine and are staffed by dedicated volunteer physicians and medical students. SRFC aims to provide quality health care while also providing valuable, hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of socially responsible physicians.

It is our passion and responsibility to provide healthcare, an essential human right, to the people of Detroit.
Where are you located? What hours are you open?
Our clinic is located at 1234 Porter St., Detroit, MI 48226. We share this space with the St. Frances Cabrini Clinic, another free clinic of Detroit.
We see patients on variable Saturdays, from 9am to noon. Please contact us to find which specific Saturdays we will be open.
Do I need insurance?
No! Treatment at SRFC is free. Any necessary medications or laboratory costs are covered by SRFC and completely at no cost to the patient.
How do I make an appointment?
You can get in touch with us by phone or text by our clinic phone number (313) 444-5490. The best time to reach us is during our office hours on Wednesdays from 6-7pm or on our Saturday clinics from 8:30am to 12pm.

Since we are a student-run free clinic staffed by volunteer full-time medical students, our hours of availability may be limited. Please leave your name, phone number, and reason for calling and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you for your understanding!
Do you accept walk-ins?
Yes, we can often accommodate walk-in patients! However, we highly recommend scheduling an appointment with us to ensure that you can be seen in a timely manner.
What lab tests do you offer?
We are proud to offer a wide range of free, in-house testing services provided by experienced personnel. We offer:
  • Standard Metabolic Blood Tests
  • Disease Screening Blood Tests
  • Standard Urinalysis Tests
  • Respiratory Function Tests
We currently do not offer COVID-19 vaccinations, TB tests for work, or drug tests.
Read more on our Laboratory Testing page, and please see our “Laboratory Testing FAQs” below for further frequently asked laboratory questions.

Laboratory Testing FAQs
How much does testing cost? Do I need insurance for these tests?
Testing fees are covered entirely by SRFC. Tests are completely free of charge to the patient. Insurance is not required or asked for.
Can I request that SRFC perform tests without a prescription? If a medical provider not associated with SRFC prescribes testing, can I have these tests performed at SRFC?
SRFC only performs testing ordered by SRFC care providers. Our doctors and providers carefully review and discuss each patient’s case before choosing which tests are to be performed. Patients can feel assured knowing that all relevant and important tests will be carefully considered by the care professionals.

SRFC does not provide testing prescribed by non-SRFC providers. Our staff are happy to assist patients in finding other local testing centers that can fulfill these prescribed tests.
Does SRFC provide all laboratory tests available at other care centers, such as hospitals?
There are a very large number of clinical tests that are used by healthcare providers. Unfortunately, some of these tests require specialized equipment that is not available at SRFC. For these tests, SRFC provides testing prescriptions that can be fulfilled at local non-SRFC testing centers (ie: Quest Diagnostics). These outside tests are pre-paid for by SRFC. No insurance or payment will be requested at these outside testing centers.

However, there are some tests that are too expensive to justify for a charity-funded clinic. These tests will be carefully considered, and SRFC care providers may recommend that patients follow-up on these tests with other healthcare facilities. We may be able to help patients in such circumstances find the resources that they need.
Does SRFC provide testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
SRFC provides testing for some STIs. These tests must first be ordered by SRFC care providers after they carefully review the patient’s case.

We are currently able to provide tests for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis.
We are currently not able to provide tests for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
Telemedicine FAQs
What is Telemedicine?
Telemedicine is a method of care that uses electronic communications to attend to patients, without an in-person clinic visit. We currently offer both in-person clinic appointments and telemedicine appointments, at different dates.
Should I be seen at an in-person clinic appointment or for a telemedicine appointment?
Please contact us to schedule an appointment. New patients will typically always be scheduled for an in-person appointment.

In general, our care teams will determine which mode of medicine is best suited for your needs.

How do I prepare for a Telemedicine appointment? What do I need?
You will need a phone or device with a camera and microphone that is capable of accessing the internet. We will send you a website link through text message for you to navigate to on your device.

Please enable both camera and microphone access if asked, and wait to be seen.
